Commemoration Day 2020

If all had gone to plan, we would have jumped on a train from Catford Bridge to London bridge and walked to Southwark Cathedral...

An extract from an address by Mr Hewlett, Headmaster:

"So what can we do with this [2020] commemoration day? My belief is that we must look back more than ever and celebrate and be thankful for our past and what it teaches us, in order in part that it might inform our response to the current and our plans for the future. We should be mindful of the words of our founding governors, whose insistence it was that the education at St Dunstan's should 'be ahead of its current time'. To be mindful of the words of our great founding Headmaster, Charles Maddock Stuart, and to reflect on his words, as I have done before, that: 'our whole life here is one long strain of endurance. Nothing goes exactly as we want it; rich or poor, worker or sufferer, boy or man, we have each to endure some contradiction, to stand quietly in the presence of something we should like to alter'.To allow words such as these to resonate in everything we plan for today; how we support the children and parents at home, how we support our community in its fight against the pandemic, how we support our staff and their families, how we continue to plan for our bright future, how we ensure the ongoing development of our sites, building wonderful new buildings that will, in time, be brought alive by the children who will occupy them.

So I wish you all a happy commemoration day. A day by which, perhaps, we can all draw on something of the history of St Dustan's in guiding our narrative and response to the current challenge and the new future that will follow. Albam exorna! "
